Project Details

In June 2018, Millstone Weber (MW) was awarded this contract with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to remove and replace the Martin Luther King Illinois Approach Bridge. The bridge carries traffic over Interstate 55/64, Illinois Route 3, and three sets of railroad tracks. Construction of the new bridge required a tremendous amount of coordination between MW, IDOT, and other project stakeholders, including impacted Railroads. The new five-span structural steel bridge was constructed on 48" diameter pipe pile driven over 100' to bedrock. The bridge superstructure includes steel plate girders over 8' deep. Construction on the new bridge began in mid-2018 and the bridge was completed and opened to traffic in August 2020.
